Raku - happiness in the accident (translation)

Most of the work I do is Raku, a technique developed by Zen Buddhist monks in Japan in the early 1550’s.

The technique involves heating the pots to approximately 1800 degrees then removing the red hot pots and placing them in metal chambers with combustible materials before cooling them with water.

This process creates unique cracking patterns and deep layers of texture within the glazes.

I am particularly drawn to this technique as the fire is true creator of the piece, I am just the assistant.
